Central Coast Language and Learning Center Services

Our Services Include:

Educational Evaluations

We offer assessments in all areas of learning including:

  • One-to-one individualized instruction
  • We work as partners with parents and teachers to tailor instruction to individual needs
  • School Consultation
  • We serve as consultants and work collaboratively with teachers to develop educational programs for students within the school setting
  • Also available for high school and college students
  • Coaching for transition between educational/work settings

A full educational evaluation helps the client learn how he or she learns best. If learning is more difficult, frustrating, or time consuming than others, CCLLC can evaluate a student’s developmental learning profile and make recommendations for appropriate instruction. Our evaluations are based on a battery of tests that assess intelligence, processing, academic skills language development and behavioral issues related to learning. Evaluation is essential in planning an instructional program for those who learn differently.

Individuals come to Central Coast Language and Learning Center with learning differences that range from mild learning problems to those who have complex learning disabilities. This range includes:

  • Learning style differences
  • Specific Learning Disabilities (including dyslexia, language disorders, and nonverbal learning disabilities)
  • Attentional difficulties (including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
  • Gifted learners
  • Autism

We work as partners with students, parents, teachers and other professionals to help students reach their potential.

Educational Evaluations involve assessment in one or more of the following areas:

  • Cognitive Assessment measures both verbal and nonverbal learning ability
  • Language Assessment focuses on oral language abilities, including receptive and expressive language.
  • Academic Assessment examines performance in academic skill areas including reading, written language and math

The Evaluation Process

  1. When a parent or adult student contacts CCLLC, we gather basic information regarding the student and areas of concern, explain the evaluation process, and schedule an appointment.
  2. To help in the evaluation process, we ask that parents or adult students complete background questionnaires prior to completing an evaluation. For children, we also suggest that their teachers complete questionnaires.
  3. On the day of the scheduled evaluation, parents or the adult student meet with the evaluator to clarify any areas of concern and to review relevant background information. Parents should bring any relevant records, as the evaluator will review information regarding the individual’s current school performance.
  4. We provide comprehensive evaluations for each unique learner, and therefore request that an entire day be set aside for testing. Evaluations usually take five to six hours; however, in some cases, a follow-up appointment may be necessary to complete the evaluation.
  5. Following the testing, the student and/or the student’s parents meet with the evaluator to discuss the findings from the assessment process as well as recommendations for appropriate interventions
  6. The evaluation also includes a comprehensive written report to the parents or adult student detailing test results and recommendations for instruction. This report is completed within four weeks of the date of the evaluation. The evaluator is available to consult with school personnel regarding the implementation of recommendations.
  7. Record Reviews are helpful if a student has had several evaluations and questions are still unanswered. A record review includes a thorough analysis of a student’s educational, psychological and/or medical records. This review includes a written report with specific recommendations.

Educational Therapy

Educational Therapy is individualized instruction that utilizes information from the client’s social, emotional, psychoeducational, and neuropsychological history. The purpose of educational therapy is to clarify learning problems and facilitate learning about learning. Educational therapists (CET) are certified through the Association of Educational Therapists (AET) and are trained to assess and remediate areas of difficulty, and to teach compensatory strategies to students with learning disabilities, and other learning differences. Educational Therapists at Central Coast Language and Learning Center are trained in several structured language and math programs and will provide mentoring as well as tutoring.

Speech-Language Therapy

Speech-Language Therapists (CCC-SLP) are specialists trained to facilitate speech and language development and treat language and speech disorders.Language is essential to communication and learning. Speech therapy targets receptive and expressive language including vocabulary, listening comprehension, following directions, oral and written expression.

Tutoring

Tutoring supports academic success in specific subject areas. Tutoring sessions are scheduled two to four times a week for between one and two hours each meeting. Goals and objectives are discussed with the student’s support system (parents, teachers, and other professionals); progress reports help to track the effectiveness of tutoring; and an end of the term’s parent conference allows feedback for the student and his/her network of support.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps individuals develop life and job skills necessary for independence. Work with an occupational therapist (OT) can include improving performance of daily activities, home and job site evaluations with adaptation recommendations, performance skills assessments and treatment, adaptive equipment recommendations and training, guidance to family members and caregivers.

NLD Coaching

NLD Coaching sessions are designed to explore interventions for individuals with Nonverbal Learning Disorder. NLD Coaching involves supportive interaction between the family and the coach, to help the NLD individual actualize his/her potential.  NLD Coaching sessions consist of telephone conferences, scheduled for one half-hour or one hour, three or four times a month. The time is the client's, as is the focal point of the conversations - with the coach helping to clarify and reflect the client's thoughts and ideas.

Counseling

Counselors are Marriage and Family Therapists and interns (MFTs) trained to assess, diagnose and treat individuals, families and groups to promote productive school, family and social adjustment. Counselors at Central Coast Language and Learning Center specialize in child, family and group counseling, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, school adjustment, motivation and social skills.

Language Intensive

Our summer language intensive is for children 4-6 years old to provide a language rich environment to increase school readiness skills and receptive and expressive language skills. Activities are tailored to the groups needs while targeting skills such as phonological awareness, vocabulary development, imaginative play, and letter-sound correspondence. Various themes and play-based language intervention is used including cooking, gardening, arts and crafts. The program includes one-to-one and small group attention as well as pre and post screenings.
